ABOUT MONTAIGNE Michel de Montaigne (1533 - 1592) was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. He is known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. His work is noted for its merging of casual anecdotes and autobiography with intellectual insight. Montaigne had a direct influence on numerous Western writers. His massive volume Essais contains some of the most influential essays ever written. Montaigne came to be recognized as embodying, perhaps better than any other author of his time, the spirit of freely entertaining doubt that began to emerge at that time. He is most famously known for his skeptical remark, ''Que sçay-je?" Or What do I know?"ABOUT THE BINDERY: Sangorski & Sutcliffe is a firm of bookbinders established in London in 1901. It is considered to be one of the most important bookbinding companies of the 20th century, famous for its luxurious jeweled bindings that used real gold and precious stones in their book covers. It became recognised as one of the leading bookbinders in London. The bindery moved to Poland Street, and managed to survive through the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: All five volumes are in NEAR FINE or better condition - strongly bound with square spines, firm hinges and joints and tight pages. The boards and spines are colorful with only mild sunning to the spine. Light rubbing to edges. Volume 5 has a rubbing mark across the front board. The lightly rubbed corners are sharp and unbumped. The interior pages are clean and bright with no writing, bookplates or foxing. Some age-toning to the page edges and outer page margins. Despite the tissue-guards, there is some frontispiece offsetting, as is the case with all examples of this set.
