"Seeley was brought up in the traditions of evangelical churchmanship, and his publications were mainly confined to books expounding evangelical opinions." He published the works of Richard Cecil, many of the publications of the Church Missionary Society, and biographies of Hannah More, John Newton, and Henry Martyn. He wrote many articles for publication, and several books, most notably "Essays on the Church, by a Layman,1834, which went through many editions.
