First edition. Scharff (1858-1934) was an expert mainly on Irish zoology but studied throughtout Europe and Canada. He was a proponent of the land-bridge hypothesis of animal migration. Decorative Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 258 pages. Ornately decorated blue cloth, both blind stamped and gilt decorated/lettered. Tightly bound, but rear hinge shown signs of strain. Blindstamp on title page states "Dunedin Mechanics Institute" but no indication of this being a library copy, so I'm unsure why it's been stamped. A superb copy. Frontispiece, plus 70 line drawings, photographs and distribution maps. Scharff's effort was to emulate Alfred Wallace's work on geographical distribution by isolating European animals with similar scrutiny regarding their ranges and relationships.
