New York, crown octavo, x, 21 p. ***CONTENT: Osborn was a renowned geologist and paleontologist at the Museum of Natural History in New York; he named both T. rex and Velociraptor, and was a staunch advocate of evolution, albeit with his own (not always Darwinian) perspective. As Osborn states in his foreword, this essay was written in reply to the ideas of William Jennings Bryan and his fundamentalist supporters that acceptance of evolution is incompatible with true religion. In support of the alternative conclusion, Osborn cites the viewpoints of religious leaders from the time of St. Augustine to that of Charles Kingsley - viewpoints completely congruent with those of many evolution scientists of his day. ***CONDITION: This is a near Fine copy in the original red cloth, with gilt lettering and decoration on the front cover and backstrip. The volume is housed in the original printed-paper dust jacket. Save for a trace of rubbing, the covers are well preserved, with bright, bold gilt lettering; dust jacket sound and near VG, but chipped at the crown and lightly foxed. Joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. The text pages are pristine: fresh, clean and bright. The only evidence of previous ownership is a small stamp on the half-title page.
