Washington, quarto, [iv], xi, [1], 291 p., 80 engraved figures (on 72 sheets), plus folding map and profile at rear. ***CONTENT: This is John Wesley Powell's remarkable narrative of his explorations in the Grand Canyon, and his party's intrepid adventures running the rapids of the Green and Colorado rivers in small, open, wooden boats. It should be noted that Powell had lost his right arm at Shiloh in 1862, and occupied a chair lashed to his boat's deck for much of the journey! Part I of this classic treatise describes the history of exploration in the Colorado canyons, part II describes the physical features of the region, and part III outlines the zoology of the district. Many of the engraved figures are by Thomas Moran and H.H. Nichols, noted landscape artists; they illustrate river and canyon scenery, geology, Native Americans and wildlife, and are most striking and handsome. This is a core volume in any comprehensive Colorado River/Grand Canyon library. ***CONDITION: A fully complete, Fine copy, bound in antique-style brown morocco and marbled boards. The gilt-ruled backstrip has four raised bands and gilt-lettered red and black morocco title labels. The covers are pristine; joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. Except for a faint corner tide-mark to a few early pages, the text pages and illustrations are very fresh, clean and bright. The folding topographical map, entitled "Green River from the Union Pacific Railroad to the mouth of White River, 1873" measures 22 by 30 inches, and is supple and well preserved. The companion "Profile of the Green River and Colorado River of the West [&c.]" is also clean and sound, but has a bit of very light foxing to one recto edge; it unfolds to 19.25 by 22.25 inches. The map and profile were not issued with all copies of this work. The only indications of previous ownership are a small, stamped number on the title-page verso and one text page. This is a superb, most handsome copy of this now scarce treatise. Howes P528. Graff 3334. Prime 58. Schmeckebier 41. BMNH Suppl. 1209. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
