Publisher's green blind-stamped cloth, sometime re-backed to match - original gilt spine laid-on. Replacement end papers. Contemporary ownership signature to first blank. Sporadic marginal spotting and thumbing. The first map has some creasing and wear to the fold. Overall a 'VG' copy. Thomas Baines 1820-1875 was an English artist and explorer of British colonial southern Africa and Australia. In 1858 he accompanied David Livingstone along the Zambezi and was one of the first white men to view the Victoria Falls. His expedition to south west Africa in 1861-62 with James Chapman was the first during which extensive use was made of both photography and painting. An accomplished artist, in 1869 Baines produced some of the drawings for the engravings in Wallace's 1869 book The Malay Archipelago. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 012191
