First impression of the true first edition. With a five-page foreword by D. H. Lawrence written at Taormina, Sicily. Interestingly, this copy has the ownership signature of R. Vaughan Williams in black fountain pen ink to the top of the front free endpaper. ***Very good in burgundy cloth-covered boards with the original red-printed white paper label to the spine. The fragile label is complete, just slightly marked. The boards are quite clean, with just light marks commensurate with age and handling. Page block edges clean. No tears to the fragile cloth, except for a small hole to the outer cloth covering on the edge of the spin eNo bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with the original signature of Ralph Vaughan Williams at the top of the front free endpaper. Very light offsetting to the endpapers, with a little light sporadic foxing within the book. Pages otherwise clean. No dustwrapper. ***176 pages 214mm x 154mm. ***Contents: Foreword; I. Introduction; II. The Holy Family; III. Plexuses, Planes and So On; IV. Trees and Babies and Paps and Mamas; V. The Five Senses; VI. First Glimmerings of Mind; VII. First Steps in Education; VIII. The Lower Self. ***'David Herbert Lawrence (11 Sep 1885 - 2 Mar 1930) was an English novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Several of his novels, "Sons and Lovers", "The Rainbow", "Women in Love", and "Lady Chatterley's Lover", were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language. Lawrence's opinions and artistic preferences earned him a controversial reputation; he endured contemporary persecution and public misrepresentation of his creative work throughout his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile that he described as a "savage enough pilgrimage". At the time of his death, he had been variously scorned as tasteless, avant-garde, and a pornographer who had only garnered success for erotica; however, English novelist and critic E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation". Later, English literary critic F. R. Leavis also championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness.' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of the first impression of the true first edition, one of just 1,000 copies printed, and with the ownership signature of Ralph Vaughan Williams to the top of the front free endpaper. Of interest to collectors of D. H. Lawrence and the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6425x
