heraldic engraved f/piece of the arms of Charles Lloyd of Dolobran (b.1613) - motto: 'Watch'+ t.p. with another smaller central engraved coat of arms+117+(2, 'Index to Appendix' with Aldine colophon on verso, 7 full page engravings (I make it), several text ills, decorated headers, chapter initials and footers, front edge uncut (with some inevitable nicking and dustiness to protruding papes). Innocuous small (15 mm) round stamps of Birmingham Assay Office Library bottom frotn endpaper, verso t.p. and rear pastedown; green boards clean but all corners rubbed and two small patches of paper loss bottom front, thin lettered vellum spine unworn but darkened, dark strips (c. 2cm wide) beside spine both front and back. This is however a complex and interesting copy, Recto rear endppaper and top verso same have detailed list of errata, the entries being marginally noted in main text 'see errata', also spotted a small proof correction in red crayon on p.42 (amending 'Bolton and Watts' to 'Boulton and Watt'), these are I think by C.B.Lloyd (see below); slipped in are two 1892 dated letters and two pages of notes. The letters are dated (a) 10th December from Edgbaston Grove, Birmingham to a Samuel Pimmins from G.B.Lloyd, thanking him for a newspaper cutting and commenting on its contents - the script mateches that of the errata in main text, (b) dated 3rd December is to a Mr Timms from a C.D.Stu ???, noting that 'Farm and its Inhabitants is unfortunately not a reliable authority in matters of genealogy and many of the names of children are omitted', it is mainly concerned with the Will of Sampson Lloyd. The two slips of paper with additional notes are in different handwriting to either letter and seem to note a few more errata or additional comments on specific pages.A second G.B.Lloyd letter to Pimmins dated 14th February 1887 tells him that he has asked Mrs Lowe to forward him a copy of the book 'with all the Errata which she has heard of inscribed on the fly leaf'. which raises an interesting question - the errata list on rear fly leaf here is quite clearly in .G.B.Lloyd's handwriting - so did she give Pimmins another copy with her own errata list or did G.B.Lloyd actually inscribe the errata for her? The fact that there are two Pimmins letters with the book surely suggests the latter. These letters now in a film-fronted pocket. There are, in addition to all this, 4 late 19th century newspaper cutting, all browning to varying degrees, two dated 1894 and 1898, the others (one very small) undated, one of which concerns the Will of Sampson Lloyd mentioned previously, the otehrs all relating to aspects of Lloyds family histtory, and as a bonus a 1991 Metro News cutting about Lloyd House in Sparkbrook where Sampson Lloyd founded the Lloyds banking dynasty - reporting its conversion into the HQ of a housing association. The Lloyds initially suffered persecution in Wales for their Quaker beliefs and Sampson Lloyd II acquired Owen's Farm ('Farm') near Birmingham in 1742 A unique item for family, banking, Quaker and Birmingham historians all four.
