A scarce uncorrected proof copy of the true first edition. Illustrated throughout with drawings and photographs, mostly by the author, including a colour frontispiece. ***A good copy in the original publisher's plain buff-coloured paper wrappers, without any titles. As to be expected for a fragile production of this sort, the wrappers are rubbed, marked and creased. The paper has worn away at the lower spine, revealing the page gatherings, but the spine is still tight and intact. Lower corner of first few pages curled. The top corner of most of the pages lightly bumped. Some foxing to the interior pages, mostly to the first and last few pages. No inscriptions. No tears. ***235mm x 165mm. 328 pages. 24 plates from photographs. ***The book contains two separate narratives: the first is a cultural tour of Soviet Russia in the 1920's, and the second covers the trade route from Sikkim to Gyantse. ***'Robert Byron (26 Feb 1905 - 24 Feb 1941) was a British travel writer, best known for his travelogue "The Road to Oxiana". He was also a noted writer, art critic and historian. He died in 1941, during the Second World War, when the ship on which he was travelling was torpedoed by a U-Boat off Cape Wrath, Scotland, en route to Egypt. His body was never found.' [Quote from Wiki] ***An uncorrected proof copy of the first edition in English of this travel writing classic. Of interest to collectors of the works of Robert Byron - an uncorrected proof copy of this pre-war first edition being a particular unusual example of the author's work to find. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7064a
