Author's first book. 12mo. volume with tan cloth spine and brown paper covered boards; paper spine label & paper label on front cover. Condition: certainly not a perfect copy. The spine ends are chipped & the spine label is soiled; the front cover is blemished with lesser staining to the back cover. Internally, there are two bookplates from previous owners, one on the 1st pastedown, the other on the 1st free endpaper. The book block is splitting between the 2nd and 3rd blank leaves; there is a tide-mark (about 1/3") extending from the top to the bottom of the fore-edge of all the pages in the book. Los Angeles, Grafton Publishing Company, 1912, first edition, first printing. This slim hardcover, the Author's First Book, was issued without a dust jacket, Jeffers paid to have the book published in an edition of 500 copies, with the vast majority of those sold to a used book store, his authorial credit uses his full name (later shortened to just Robinson Jeffers). Very good minus with general soiling and age, Holmes Book Company of Los Angeles stamp to front free endpaper, the word "Apples" on the spine label is mostly obscured, the front cover label has tiny chipping around the edges, not affecting any of the text or the decoration. No previous ownership marks or book-plates. Housed in a custom slipcase with folding inner sleeve and black leather label ruled and lettered in gold on spine.
