Author of "The Coming of Cuculain", "The Chain of Gold", "Lost on Du-Corrig!" etc. ***First cheap edition (originally published in 1897). ***Very good in buff-coloured boards with black titles to spine. Spine tight. No inscriptions. In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, showing original publisher's price of 2/6 on the spine. Extremities of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Tiny closed tear to top edge of front panel of dustwrapper near to head of spine. No chips. Colour illustrated front cover nice and bright. ***314 pages including notes to rear. 188 mm x 132 mm. ***A hard to find book, especially so in the attractive original colour illustrated dustwrapper in such nice condition. ***An historical novel set in the Elizabethan era and based on fact - The 'Nine Years' War in Ireland from 1594 to 1603 - about the kidnap of the Gaelic Irish chieftain Hugh Roe O'Donnell of Tír Chonaill and his allies, and how he led Ireland in the Nine Years War against English rule in Ireland. The war, fought mainly in the northern province of Ulster ended in defeat for the Irish chieftains, which led to their exile in the Flight of the Earls and to the Plantation of Ulster, and hence the title of the novel 'The Flight of The Eagle'. The war was the largest conflict fought by England in the Elizabethan era. ***'This tale, in spite of its title, is not a romance, but an actual historical episode, told with hardly a freer use of the historical imagination than is employed by the more popular and picturesque of our professed historians. ---The authorities for the story are the "Annals of the Four Masters"; Philip O'Sullivan's charmingly Herodotean narrative, in Latin, entitled Histoira Hibernia; O'Clery's "Bardic Life of Hugh Roe"; and the "Calendar of State Papers, Ireland," from 1857 forward. The colouring, the visualization and dramatization, are, however, derived from a wider circle of contemporary literature. I may add that the book contains almost nothing for which there is not direct or indirect historical justification.' (Quote by the author taken from the Preface) ***Of interest to historians and Irish scholars. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 2172
