Beschreibung
Third impression of the true first edition. The book was originally published in 1943. The illustrated front panel of dustwrapper shows a black and white sketch of Falstaff which is unattributed, but is very much in the style of Mervyn Peake who was illustrating books at that time. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. No inscriptions. Pages clean. Boards clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good buff-coloured, illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of 10s. 6d. net. Extremities of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Very small closed tear to bottom of rear panel of dustwrapper. Shallow loss to head of spine of dustwrapper. Dustwrapper clean. Front panel of dustwrapper bright. 192mm x 128mm. viii prelim-pages including contents and preface plus 143 pages including notes to rear. ***'Bradley's portrait of Falstaff and Prince Hal, as shown in his 1902 lecture, The Rejection of Falstaff, in spite of the challenges of Professor Stoll, had continued to satisfy most Shakespearean scholars in the main. Professor Dover Wilson had accepted it until (as he writes) he --- "began checking it with yet another portrait - that which I found in the pages of Shakespeare himself. As the result of much recent work on the two parts of Henry IV, a new Falstaff stands before me". --- This book, an expansion of the Clark Lectures delivered in Cambridge in 1943, contains the working out of the new portraits of Falstaff and Prince Hal.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***'Here are a penetrating mind and wide human sympathies at work on two plays in which the grandest range of Shakespearean genius is to be found. [The Observer - quote from review blurb to rear panel of dustwrapper]. ***Third impression of the true first edition, complete in its original third impression dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4841
