Original gilt stamped and decorative blue cloth cover, gilt titled spine; with beveled boards. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers are lightly soiled, rubbed and small amount of wear on edges; gilt bright. Interior pages are clean and tight. The two original mounted photograph portraits of Lt. Col. Sheldon & Lt. Col. Pardee are clean and well preserved. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: This is a fine history of a noted regiment originally organized by James Garfield, the future president. Quite scarce and seldom offered for sale, this copy is particularly nice. It is unusual to have original images pasted in for illustrations. REFERENCES: RYAN 453: "Major General, afterwards President Garfield, was the first Colonel of this regiment, which was organized at Camp Chase, in September, October and November, 1861, to serve three years. This work is one of the best of regimental histories and it tells its story in true literary style, making it not only a fitting memorial for the Forty-Second Ohio Volunteer Infantry, but a valuable collection of material for ultimate history. From the first page to the last it holds the reader's attention and interest …The closing chapters of this work show the losses by battle and disease by the aggregated muster-roll of the regiment. Mason frequently describes the country through which he marched, the mountains, the towns and cities, and the people.
