Trenton, small folio, [Two matching volumes: Vol. I: xx, 338 p., plus 35 plates with explanatory leaves, a folding, colored geologic map, and text illustrations; Vol. II: 402 p., plus 50 plates with explanatory leaves, and text illustrations]. This is NOT the much more common issue of these works by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Government Printing Office in their "Monograph" series. ***CONTENT: Robert Parr Whitfield (1828-1910) was an American invertebrate paleontologist and Curator of Geology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. An assistant to the celebrated paleontologist James Hall, Whitfield produced more than 80 reports on fossils, and was known for his precise descriptions and careful illustrations. The fossiliferous Raritan Clays and Greensand Marls (Cretaceous-Eocene) of southern New Jersey contain a variety of marine invertebrates: brachiopods, lamellibranchs (bivalves), gastropods (snails and similar univalves), and the chambered cephalopods (e.g. ammonites). All these forms are classified and described in these volumes. The lithographic and photographic plates greatly enhance the understanding of the text data. ***CONDITION: These are complete, near-Fine, uniform copies bound in the original textured dark brown cloth, with the State seal of New Jersey stamped in gilt on the front covers and gilt lettering on the backstrips. The covers and spines are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. Cover and spine gilt bright. Outer joints fully intact, inner hinges just starting but strong, bindings very firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean, and bright. Neat archival repairs to small splits on a few pages; two leaves with minor loss to the upper corner, not affecting any printing. No foxing or stains. No evidence of previous ownership. These are very nice copies of two important works, scarce in this condition. Nickles 1104, 1105. BMNH 2312. Domestic and international shipping may be extra for these heavy volumes, but only at my cost. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers OG5508
