It was a time from which a great deal of fiction draws inspiration, an exciting and dramatic period well~salted with the Washingtons, Johnsons, Frontenacs, Amhersts, Wolfes, and Montcalms who so greatly influenced the early growth of our land. Edward Hamilton has reconstructed this absorbing story of wilderness, forts, and weapons with a scholarly respect for minute details. When he describes a bateau or explains how a flintlock works, you know he is right, and his description becomes the real thing~fierce and full of power. The reader toils along with the ragged men who carried canoes across portages, and curses with those who, harnessed like cattle, dragged the guns through the mud before Louisbourg. French colonies spanned the continent to Illinois and Wisconsin, while the English hugged the seacoast and rivers. Here lay the basic conflict as the English desperately tried to penetrate the barrier of the Appalachians~at first meeting only disaster. Mr. Hamilton points out that it was the mountains and rivers of America which finally determined the outcome of this war~he explains fully how the English won it. Here are the battles and the sieges~ Ticonderoga, Duquesne, Quebec ~ fought again, this time the military maneuvers illuminated with simple clarity and shrewd comments by a dedicated historian. An essential element in the struggle was the Indian. Was the "noble red man" occasionally really a coward, waiting to see who was going to win before taking one side or the other? Answering with facts and reasons, the author recounts an intriguing narrative of massacres and tomahawks as two great powers fought for and against the natural inhabitants of the land. Vital, thrilling, and fascinating, the French and Indian Wars culminated an age~old rivalry and set the scene for the years to come. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1112402
