Gift inscription to front free endpaper: 'A present from Eunice' in blue biro pen, with owner's name and date in blue fountain pen ink: 'K. Margaret Jarvis, Christmas 1955.' Spine tight. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper, that has been price-clipped by the publisher, showing the revised printed price of 9/6 net. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. Tiny loss to corners of dustwrapper. Small tear to bottom of front panel of dustwrapper. Shallow loss to head of spine of dustwrapper. Very small closed tear to top edge and bottom edge of rear panel of dustwrapper. Rear panel of dustwrapper slightly discoloured and rubbed (being white background). Spine and front panel of dustwrapper bright. 256 pages. 192 mm x144 mm. ***'As the result of this advertisement [vicar's wife advertises home to one to two children under seven as companions to own child] three children, unwanted at home for various reasons, were sent to Appleton Vicarage for the summer of 1921, and from then onwards the lives of the four were closely interlinked. The childhood of each was darkened by the shadow of insecurity, and the story traces their fortunes from 1921 to 1945, when their own children were in their turn installed in the Vicarage as evacuees. This best selling author paints her canvas with her usual skill.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper, uncommon to find in such nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6440
