Beschreibung
Rare, early printing. Large 8"x10" design. Matches coveted 1916 Brentano's first printing in general design, illustrations, font, and page layout. This cover design places 1916 edition spine image at front cover, and the back board image at spine. Orange full-cloth boards, art nouveau black-stamped cover art and spine titles, some corner, shelf wear, exterior spine chip, missing material. Thick, deckled pages generally very good; no writing. Front blank endpaper removed; closed tear w/little missing material at half-title page. Illustrated with the intriguing renderings of Harry Clark in color and b&w throughout. Bind good; front hinge reinforced. Scarce, solid early printing. Includes sixteen, fine, nouveau, colour plates and twenty-four additional full-page chiaroscuro-like illustrations by Harry Clarke; additional richly engimatic and bold Clarke illustrations, decoration, and borders. These were highly influential renderings during the golden age of gift-book illustration in first quarter of twentieth century.
