Provenance: Bookplate of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Library of Charles P. Daly Chief Judge of the Court of Common Pleas / Gift of Henry R. Hoyt 1907. William Sheppard was one of the most prolific and diverse legal authors of the seventeenth century. After Sir Edward Coke, Sheppard is the most influential legal writer of the seventeenth century and a fascinating figure for his role in the Interregnum and Restoration. Sheppard wrote tracts dealing with every relevant branch of law in the period, from real property law to instructions for constables. His work has found places in legal bibliographies and legal histories, with his efforts at a legal encyclopedia and his work as a law reformer drawing great interest. For his reforming work, England s Balme (1656) is a fully formed collection of Sheppard s proposed reforms, and his Actions Upon the Case for Deeds (1663) serves as an excellent study of precedent and it effect on law. The Faithfull Councellor was perhaps Sheppard s most ambitious work; an attempt at a legal encyclopedia. The effort was sponsored by the Rump Parliament, who desired a vernacular abridgment of English law as part of their general program of law reform and codification. The work described legal processes through case examples, including an important contribution on chancery law, codifying and defining terms throughout. The work saw numerous editions, of which the first and second are included in this set, the first being bound on its own and the second bound with the Second Part of the Faithfull Councellor (1654.) Sheppard was disappointed with the publication of the Second Part, owing to the publisher failing to have it properly edited. The resulting work was somewhat disorganised, being based on the notes Sheppard had used in previous works, and as Matthews notes, his introduction reads like and apologetic. The reason for such a rushed publication were largely to do with the Rump Parliament s desire for legitimacy, and their hope that a large body of legal discourse would give them increased clout.
