Stated at copyright: "Copyright, 1929 by Charles Scribner's Sons." Larger 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" design. Matching Scribner design with plates at cover and spine on black cloth boards; complete and unabridged utilizing the original printing plates by arrangement with Charles Scribner's Sons. Smooth black cloth boards, vibrant red cover and spine title plates, near fine. Deckled pages near fine; some toning at endpapers. Deep dark red top-stain. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Features jacket design with bold red and silver block letters on black silhouette background of battlefield wrapping to spine titles in similar motif, moderate edge wear, rub, sunning; unclipped code 100.100, protected in new clear sleeve. Amazing dimensional reflective silver on red block titles. Very attractive. Front flap features summary review of this title; back flap with summary of "God's Little Acre" by Erskine Caldwell. Back panel features "Names." and list of titles available from selected authors. Caldwell's book at back flap was first published in 1933. Near fine early printing in scarce near very good original wrapper. The story recounts the romance between Frederic Henry, an American soldier, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. Heavily autobiographical, the plot was directly inspired by Hemingway's relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky in Milan. Catherine's parturition (childbirth) was inspired by the intense labor pains of Pauline in the birth of Patrick - Ernest' second wife and second son - and the real-life Kitty Cannell inspired the fictional Helen Ferguson. The priest was based on Don Giuseppe Bianchi, the priest of the 69th and 70th regiments of the Brigata Ancona. 355 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
