Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. no date [1873]. First edition of Bierce's first book, preceding the first American edition. 12mo plum pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and blind with the gilt devil on the front cover and spine. The title engraving shows a corpulent man roasting a baby over a spit. From the preface: "The atrocities constituting this 'cold collation' of diabolisms are taken mainly from various Californian journals. They are cast in the American language, and liberally enriched with unintelligibility. I have been assisted by my scholarly friend Mr. Satan. While the plan of the work is partly my own, its spirit is wholly his; and this illustrates the ascendancy of the creative over the merely imitative mind. I shall be content with the profit." Ironically, Bierce was never paid for this work. Spine tips worn but complete and sound with the very fragile endpapers (the front free endpaper frayed at the edges) and the 30-page list of ads at the rear. Covers rubbed but the gilt devils still prominent. A very good copy of this notoriously fragile book. Very scarce thus. 0. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4641

1st US edition (BAL 1097). 197, [3] pp. T.p. vignette of a man roasting a baby on a stove. 'Donkey' cut, top margin p. [199]. 12mo. 7-1/4" x 4-7/8" Bierce "was an American short story writer, journalist, poet, and American Civil War veteran. A prolific and versatile writer, Bierce was regarded as one of the most influential journalists in the United States and as a pioneering writer of realist fiction. For his horror writing, Michael Dirda ranked him alongside Edgar Allen Poe and H. P. Lovecraft. S. T. Joshi speculates that he may well be the greatest satirist America has ever produced, and in this regard can take his place with such figures as Juvenal, Swift, and Voltaire. His war stories influenced Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway and others, and he was considered an influential and feared literary critic. In recent decades, Bierce has gained wider respect as a fabulist and poet. In 1913, Bierce told reporters that he was travelling to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. He disappeared and was never seen again." [Wiki] This the author's 1st book. Contents: Some Fiction -- Tall Talk -- Current Journalings -- Obituary Notices -- Musings, Philosophical and Theological -- Laughorisms -- "Items" from the Press of Interior California -- Poesy. Slight lean. Gilt relatively bright. Hinges starting. Withal, a pleasing VG - VG+ copy in a VG+ case. Original publisher's brown cloth with gilt stamped spine lettering & 'demon' graphics, spine & front board. Custom cut protective clear mylar wrapper. Custom black cloth clamshell case. Hard Cover. First Edition. First edition (preceding the US edition) of the author's first book, very good lacking a dust jacket. Dark maroon cloth, with gilt demon on front board and near bottom of spine. There is some loss of the cloth at the top of the spine (about 1/4"), and slight fraying at the bottom of the spine. The front endpaper is detached but laid in. The rear hinge is a little loose. With the bookplate (on front pastedown) and signature (on half title page) of Vincent Starrett, Bierce's biographer and bibliographer. A nice association copy, in all probability the copy Starrett was looking at when he compiled the first bibliography of Bierce's works, which was published in 1920. First Edition, preceding the US edition. Illustrated title page. 12mo. Purple cloth with gilt demon on front board and spine. 197. Upper hinge just very slightly shaken, and some light wear to the binding, including a small light coloured spot on the front cover, but a tight and bright copy of Bierce's first book. The 32 page publisher's catalogue at rear, with one inch torn off the upper corner of the last leaf. London, John Camden Hotten. The first collection of Bierce's writings to appear in book form, published during the author's stay in England (1872-75). The stories, aphorisms (or 'laughorisms'), invented reports and poems are of a particularly morbid and grotesque nature, and are often only saved from complete misanthropy by wit and ironic insight. These last two qualities point towards the talent and reluctant compassion that would manifest themselves in Bierce's later, best-known stories, such as An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge. Rare.
