AS PICTURED : FIVE IMAGES. Volume FOUR in the series of spiral-bound productions (28 x 21.5 cms) featuring the work of photographers who specialised in that genre of 'Artistic'/ Glamour/ mildly erotic work, mainly in B/W, before colour photography came to dominate. A very reasonable copy with only moderate wear, and no markings or inscriptions, in coloured wraps. Less well represented than some other photographers featured (Zoltan Glass in issues 3 and 5), Jack Howard was nevertheless known internationally for just a few years during the 1950s He was a multi-talented individual who tried his hand at many things, and was a student and assistant to William Mortensen of Laguna Beach, California. His influence, with a painterly compositional approach, can be seen here with some images reproduced as if they were on canvas. The book also includes many small vignettes from ink drawings and an article "How an artist can use this book". But Howard also introduced the use of non-professional models who were encouraged to engage directly with the camera, rather than with any kind of situational narrative - giving a feeling of intimacy to his work.
