Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover copies, complete in two volumes, with clean, unmarked interiors, minimal rubbing to extremities. Bound attractively in a salmon-colored linen cloth over boards, black-stamped lettering to covers and spines. Covers to Volume II neatly glue-repaired, unobtrusive. Texts fully in Latin and Greek. The author, edited here by A.G. Roos and G.G. Wirth, Lucius Flavius ??Arrianus (known in Ancient Greek as Arrianós and in German as Arrian [of Nicomedia]), was a Greek-speaking Roman politician and historian and who wrote a then definitive work about Alexander the Great, a monograph about India (following his travels there) and a history of the Diadochi, the legendary teachers. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Green informed me that Arriani is considered the most reliable of the Alexander historians when it comes to the history of events, although he is sometimes viewed more critically in recent research. Arrian also reflected the thinking of his teacher, the Stoic Epictetus, in two philosophical writings. Green says that Arrian began his literary career just before Hadrian's death. He wrotes texts and treatises on Alexander, the Great; India (Indik), Parthenon, a work of battle method and tactics, an order of battle against the Alans, eight works about the Bithynia, an early meteorological work, a tour (a "períplus") in the Black Sea area, a treatise on hunting. His writing style is said to have followed faithfully that of the Attic writers of the 5th century. The senior editor, Antoon Gerard Roos (or A.G. Roos), born in 1877 in Groningen, Holland, died there in 1953, was a Dutch classical philologist and ancient historian and who headed the Groningen University Library (1908?1917) and who was Professor of Ancient History at the Imperial University of Groningen (1917?1947). He published authoritative editions of the historians Arrian and Appian as well as the Byzantine collection of excerpts De virtutibus et vitiis.Volume I: LXVI; [1], 2-450 pp.; Volume II: LXVII [2], 2-349 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
