7 volumes in 8. 4to, (11 6/8 x 8 6/8 inches). Half-titles. 426 stipple-engraved plates printed in color and finished by hand by Lambert jeune after Anne-Ernestine Panckoucke and Pierre Jean Francois Turpin, 2 uncolored engraved tables and 6 duplicate plates in Volumes I and 7 (occasional light spotting). Near contemporary black roan backed marbled paper boards, the smooth spines gilt ruled in 5 compartments, with red and green morocco lettering-pieces (extremities rubbed). First edition, issue on large paper, and one of 20 sets issued in quarto, also issued in a an octavo edition, a very limited issue of five sets in folio, and one on vellum. A beautiful work, with plates produced during the great period of French color printing using the stipple-engraving process pioneered by the great botanical artist Pierre-Jospeh Redoute. Here they have been executed by the celebrated Turpin, pupil of Redoute, and the publisher's wife. The title does not reflect the inclusion of a number of plants that are not specifically known for their medicinal qualities: grapes, melon, palms, bananas, to name but a few.
