First Edition. A 36 page catalogue (with woodcut illustrations and photographs ) in the form of a book with card covers: "Fortnum & Mason take pleasure in presenting the good things of life for Christmas 1955". These Catalogues were not just for Christmas, they were to be kept, looked at, laughed over, and designed to encourage the recipient to reach for his or her cheque book. Fortnum's were synonymous with fun. There are 27 superb colouful illustrations by Bawden. Contains the all-important slip of paper for ordering inside. Whilst the book is lovely, the ephemerist loves the even rarer slip of paper inside. The order form shows Father Christmas and his reindeer looking out of a hot air balloon and is a rare thing indeed. Laid in are two other, extremely scarce pieces of ephemera: Firstly, a little slip of paper headed up "BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENTS" announcing that by reason of changes made in the rates of Purchase Tax since this catalogue went to press, we very much regret that many of the prices quoted herein will be subject to increase. Fortnum & Mason Ltd. Secondly there is a separate insert in the form of an A3 printed sheet with photographs and prices one side for Special Gateaux, Fondant Gateaux, Fortnum & Mason's Christmas Puddings and Christmas Cakes; on the other side there are photographs and prices for Candles, Table Decorations, Table Centres and Crackers (either 6 or 12 in a box).
