The oldest As New book I've ever owned, extremely rare in this state of being still in its original publisher's craft-paper wraps, publisher's paper label to spine noting Exemplaire sur Hollande papier. From other opened packages I can describe this as follows: Light gray printed wraps with beveled edges with publisher's device to front cover and title page. Near pristine of interior and with remarkably sharp and bright black-and-white, duotone and full-color illustrations, including at frontis, displaying the artistry of French Rococo painter and printmaker, a favored and influential artist of the dying decades of the Ancien Regime. Likely unopened top edges. Color frontis with 27 additional plates each of which is supposed have its own titled tissue guard. The author was Head Curator of the Palace of Versailles Museum from 1892-1919. This volume features discussion of the 550-plus paintings, drawings and etchings that marked Fragonard's career. A Wikipedia entry about him notes the popularity of "La "Balançoire" ("The Swing"), a masterful oil painting (found her opposite p. 84).
