A first edition, published by Collins & The Book Society. Dustwrapper designed by Lynton Lamb. 'This edition issued on first publication by the Book Society, Ltd. in association with William Collins Sons and Company Ltd. December, 1953.' ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt has largely oxidised over time. Boards quite clean with just some light marks on the spine and front board. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners quite sharp with just light creasing to the top corner tips. Binding tight and square with no reading lean. Edges of page block clean with just very light foxing to the fore-edge. The top edge is stained red by the publisher to match the boards. Internally also very good with a Book Society bookplate to the front free endpaper. Interior pages clean with no foxing. The paper stock is still white without any tanning. No creases or tears. ***In a very good original dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 10s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is complete without any chips or tears, just light rubbing and creasing to the extremities. With some very light browning to the back panel which is white. No fading even to the spine of the dustwrapper. ***255 pages. 195 mm x 135 mm. ***'Clara Margery Melita Sharp (25 Jan 1905 - 14 Mar 1991) was an English writer of 25 novels for adults, 14 children's novels, four plays, two mysteries, and numerous short stories. Her best-known work is "The Rescuers" series about a heroic mouse named Miss Bianca and her partner Bernard, which was later adapted into the animated feature film "The Rescuers" (1977) - and a sequel, "The Rescuers Down Under" (1990) - by Walt Disney Productions. In 2008 all of her adult books except for "The Eye of Love" were out of print, but in 2016 Kindle editions of ten of her novels were issued.
