Bound in saffron-colored cloth, with crisp blind-stamped lettering to the front board. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, and with fairly sharp corners. Minor wrinkling at the top front corner. Very clean binding. Note that, as is typical of this publication, the text block is not firmly bound in; the quires have some play but are holding fast. Attractive green paper pastedowns/FEPs. With 256 numbered pages, on heavy-duty, glossy stock. With numerous full color plates, including several full-page and a few double-page. An impressively clean interior. Appears gently read, with the text block still tight and not fanning. The full-pictorial dust jacket is intact but rubbed, with edge wear all along the top edge and bottom edge. A Very Good copy in a Very Good Minus DJ. 5 lbs. 5 oz. The Potala Palace sits high on the side of Red Mountain near the center of Lhasa City, the capital of Tibet, some 12,000 feet above sea level. Allegedly, the Potala Palace was first built in 637-641. It then became the chief residence of the Dalai Lama after it was reconstructed by the Fifth Dalai Lama between 1645 and 1693.The palace's building measures about 400 by 350 meters; the stone foundation is 10 to 15 feet thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. There are said to be almost 1000 rooms. This book entirely glosses over the brutal occupation of Tibet by the PRC government and military and their suppression of Tibetan culture since 1959. The book refers euphemistically to Tibet as "China's Tibet Autonomous Region." Certainly there is no mention of the fact that the palace was moderately damaged during the Tibetan uprising against the Chinese in 1959, when Chinese shells were launched into the palace's windows. In February 2022, Tibetan pop star Tsewang Norbu set himself on fire, in protest against Chinese occupation, in front of the Potala Palace and died.
