The author served under Freyberg in World War I, has produced an engaging, unofficial biography. During this war Freyberg was more than once wounded but his courage earned him the VC and on the outbreak of the Second World War he was appointed Commander of the New Zealand forces, and made a new and great military reputation in Crete and Italy.
