2 vols.: xii, 272, [1]; viii, 305, 68 p. 22 cm. Fold-out map of Chili in Vol. I. Full tree leather. Spines and hinges repaired with new labels attached. Corners worn. Ink signatures on front free endpapers and titles. Former owner's labels on front pastedowns. Some foxing, mainly to endpapers. Map is near fine with only a tiny tear. Title continues: "Illustrated by a Half-Sheet Map of the Country. With Notes From the Spanish and French versions, and an Appendix, Containing Copious Extracts from the Araucana of Don Alonzo de Ercilla. Translated from the Original Italian, by an American Gentleman. In Two Volumes." The author, a Jesuit, was born in Chile and studied the geography, botany, zoology, and history of the country until the Jesuits were expelled in 1768. He then moved to Italy which is why this work was first published in Italian in 1776. Note endpaper signature of Montreal businessman Stanley Bagg in 1824 and title page signature, possibly his son, Stanley Clarke Bagg, in 1840. Sabin 49893. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 129941
