Beschreibung
Two very scarce nineteenth century works from Joseph Crawhall's 'Chap-book Chaplets' series. Beautifully illustrated, with coloured head and tail pieces throughout, these two volumes by the Leadenhalle Press are a charming example of affordable literature Being 'George Barnewel' and 'John and Joan', numbers VII and VIII from this series. Other title from this chapbook series include 'The Babes in the Wood', 'The Taming of a Shrew' and 'I Know what I Know'. Illustrations across these works are by Joseph Crawhall of Newcastle upon Tyne. Loosely inserted to 'George Barnewel' is the publisher's adverts for the Leadenhalle Press who created this work. It is an interesting piece of ephemera published by Leadenhalle press, advertising some of their works that have been published, as well as featuring several 'printer's jokes'. Printed in the 'ye olde' style of eighteenth century texts, this catalogue is a charming and uncommon piece of ephemera. To the third page there are several printers' jokes from Andrew Tuer's 'Quads for Authors, Editor and Devils'. With a large advertisement for and specimen of 'Old Aunt Elsa's ABC' to the fourth page, and rear of this pamphlet. 'John and Joan' states to the first page that it is from 'an old black letter copy in the British museum with the initials M.P without doubt Martin Parker, a Grub-street scribbler and great ballad monger of Charles the first's time. To the tune of the paratour'. 'George Barnewel/Barnwell' states to the first leaf that it is on 'George Barnwell the London Apprentice, George Lillo's Tragedy of the same name (avowedly from the Ballad) used until recently, to be performed on Boxing night, previous to the pantomime, in order that apprentices who visited the play house on such occasion by permission of their masters, might profit by the moral lesson and godly warning. ' In original paper wraps. Externally, sound with minor chipping to the extremities. Small amount of loss to the rear wrap of 'George' due to chipping. Scattered spots to the front wrap of 'John and Joan'. Loosely inserted to 'George' is publisher's ads for Leadenhalle. This is age toned with minor chipping to the edges. Tape repair to the top internally. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 618L21
