Beschreibung
Handsomely bound in finely woven yellow cloth. The spine is stamped brightly in red and black. Very clean and tight throughout with red top staining. With 2 closed tears on p. 291: A 1.5" tear affecting 3 lines at the top of p. 291. And a 2.5" tear affecting 7 lines of type in the last paragraph on p. 292. All type is readable, and the closed tears could easily be repaired with archival tape. In the very scarce original dust jacket with the iconic figure of Gladiator on the front panel and the vertical black and white photograph of Philip Wylie on the rear panel next to his biographical write-up. The jacket has the original price of $2.50 at the top of the inside front flap and blurbs for Wylie's Heavy Laden and Babes and Sucklings also priced at $2.50 on the rear flap. The jacket is backed with brown reinforcing paper commonly used by lending libraries, and it has protected the bright yellow color of the book quite well. There are no signs of stamps or stickers indicating that was a lending library copy of the book. Gladiator is an American science fiction novel first published in 1930 and written byPhilip Wylie. The story concerns a scientist who invents an "alkaline free-radical" serum to "improve" humankind by granting the proportionate strength of an ant and the leaping ability of the grasshopper. The scientist injects his pregnant wife with the serum and his son Hugo Danner is born with superhuman strength, speed, and bulletproof skin. Hugo spends much of the novel hiding his powers, rarely getting a chance to openly use them. The novel is widely assumed to have been an inspiration for Superman, though no confirmation exists that Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were influenced by it. (Wikipedia) First Edition with matching dates of 1930 on the title and copyright pages; and no subsequent printings listed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 625
