Later boards. This book was published under the pseudonym "A Tradesman". Light tanning to pages. A very scarce item from the heroic days of Richard Carlile's publishing enterprise. Carlile was a republican, feminist and atheist who was prepared to advocate revolutionary overthrow and who attracted a considerable, mainly working class, following. During his time he republished the works of Thomas Paine (and served six years imprisonment for his trouble) and other works deemed to be blasphemous, revolutionary and obscene. He stood on the platform at Peterloo with Henry Hunt when the yeomanry charged and wrote and published a birth control manual which advovated free love. William Skinner was a Deist, from Kirkcaldy, who set out his purpose in the preface ".those who call God good and merciful, and then make him the author of cruelty and injustice; who call him the God of truth, and then father upon him innumerable lies; who make him immutable and then represent him as continually changing his mind; and who clothe him with inconsistent qualities and contradictory attributes; these are the true blasphemers.
