Beschreibung
A revised shooting script from the 1940 film directed by, for which screenwriter Nunnally Johnson would be nominated for an Oscar. The present copy includes the controversial 4 pp. final scene (that diverges from Steinbeck's ending), with the following November 1, 1939 memo from Darryl Zanuck preceding it, "This is a copy of the last section of The Grapes of Wrath. For obvious reasons, it is essential that you do not permit this copy to be read by anyone who is not directly associated with the production of this picture. Please see that this copy is returned to Mr. Koenig when you have finished with it. -Darryl Zanuck" Revisions included in pagination are alphabetically marked and dated either 9/8/39 or 10/13/39 (although emendations are mimeographed on plain white leaves). In the case of the seeming duplicates of p. 6 in pagination above, the pages 6A-B are marked "The Following as Shot" and constitute a second revision on 10/13/39 of the pivotal scene between Preacher Casy and Tom wherein Casy proposes the Rickettsian theory "So maybe there ain't not sin an' there ain't no virtue. There's just what people do. Some things folks do is nice, and some ain't so nice. But that's as far as any man's got a right to say. (holding the flask)."Inked date of 10/16/39 on preliminary memo announcing the underscored, all-caps and exclamatory change of name from "King Ranch" to Keene Ranch, ("THIS IS IMPORTANT!"). Number 467 at top left of each leaf.A few scuffs and light creases to wrappers, brads causing slight tears to wrappers (still holding); else very good or better copy of a scarce and important item.
