First U.S. edition of Lewis' final work, a meditation on grief following the death of his wife, Joy Davidman. Bumped and rubbed with tanning to the edges of the boards. Binding square and solid, pencil marginalia at some passages. Previous owner's gift inscription on the front end paper, dated Christmas 1963. First state jacket with the Clerk pseudonym.
