In the early 1900's, Santa Barbara was one of California's leading Arts and Crafts Centers; one of her most capable artists was Robert Wilson Hyde. Drawing from medieval crafts for inspiration, Hyde produced book illustrations of such amazing color and detail that he essentially revived the art of book illumination reminiscent of the style from the midieval monasteries. It is no wonder that Paul Elder, the noted San Francisco book dealer and publisher, hired Hyde to illuminate books in his inimitable style. Hyde produced one-of-a-kind volumes with leather covers and pages of parchment, written in beautiful Gothic calligraphy and illustrated in luminescent colors. He produced wedding albums, guest books, family registers, and special volumes for the holidays. These volumes were produced in a painstaking fashion, and were not cheap. This volume featured the poetic reflections on each page (see scans) of Arthur Guiterman, another Paul Elder associate. The book is filled with guest signatures on the first 8 pages. The rest of the book is not filled in. Condition: This large oblong quarto measures 11 1/4 inches X 15 1/2 inches. It is bound in gilt stamped brown cloth, with brass studs fastening two leather straps to the front and back covers. Some wear to edges, front lower leather strap is separated at the spine, but there is no leather loss. This can be easily repaired. Bound tight, spine in good shape, pages are clean and in very good condition. 144 pages in all. Very rare to the market. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000930
