The author is director of the Department of Archaeology at what is perhaps the most famous historical restoration in this country?Colonial Williamsburg. His book furnishes complete and authoritative guidance in the modern techniques of organizing and executing a historical (as opposed to a prehistorical) "dig." Mr. Noél Hume's instructions cover every phase of digging a site?step by step, detail by detail. He tells how to prospect for a likely spot and how to organize the dig. He outlines the work of each member of the team and describes both the planning and execution of the work. Using photographs and diagrams to supplement his text, he draws from his own wide experience to instruct the reader in surveying, plotting, and digging a site, in photographing, cataloging, and preserving the artifacts unearthed, and in making the final report on the dig. Whether he is discussing the intricacies of laying out a grid system or the photographing and cataloging of the artifacts collected, Mr. Noel Hume writes with both clarity and authority. His book will be invaluable for the increasing numbers of enthusiasts and students interested in digging into historical rather than prehistorical archaeology, for members of local archaeological societies?for everyone whose interest in preserving the sites and artifacts of our country's past has become more and more urgent in the face of the accelerating transformation of our rural and urban landscape. [About the author] IVOR NOEL HUME was born in London, studied at both Framlingham College and St Lawrence College in England, and served during World War Il in the Indian Army. In 1949 he joined the staff of the Guildhall Museum in London as an archaeologist. He moved to Colonial Williamsburg as chief archaeologist in 1957 and eight years later became director of the Department of Archaeology. Since 1959 Mr. Noel Hume has been an honorary research associate of the Smithsonian Institution; he is also a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and vice president of the British Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology.
