180 x 125 mm. (7 x 4 7/8"). 374 pp., [4] leaves. Attractive green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), single gilt-ruled borders, raised bands ruled in gilt, gilt lettering, gilt-ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt. With color frontispiece. â A handful of small, faint stains internally, otherwise a fine copy in a pristine binding. In a very pleasing binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, this is a semi-autobiographical comedic novel by the eminent British writer H. G. Wells, often regarded as the father of science fiction. The story follows Alfred Polly, a discontented young man who is trapped in an unhappy marriage and a failing business. After a suicide attempt that results in an accidental windfall, Polly decides to start anew and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. Ultimately, he finds peace and purpose by taking on a caretaker role at a country inn, embracing a simpler and more fulfilling life. Though best-known for his imaginative works of fiction such as "The Time Machine," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau," Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) also wrote several comedies (such as the present work) and considerable non-fiction. By the time Wells died, he had published more than 100 books and earned his fame not only as a writer, but also as a minor prophet who accurately predicted war planes, tanks, the atomic bomb, and World War II.
