Mandell Creighton 1843 1901 was a British historian and a bishop of the Church of England. A scholar of the Renaissance papacy - there is an extensive wiki entry on his life and achievements including a short bibliography. Scarce first edition set- the more so in a lovely binding. The red leather bookplate of W. A. Foyle placed over an older excised bookplate in volume one- likely to have been William Garth as his armorial bookplates are, with Foyle, in the other volumes.
