Green lettering on front cover; red lettering on spine and back cover. Book on the Israeli National Theater group Habimah, which is still in existence today, in honor of its 25th anniversary. Includes b/w photographs of plays such as Tevya the Milkman, David Reubeni, the Anusim, the Golem and William Tell. There are also photographs of the leading actors and actresses such as Zevi Friedland, Yehoshua Bertonov and Bat Ami Finkel. Projects like the Habimah theatre formed a major aspect of the Zionist enterprise. Following in the footsteps of the Yiddishist movement, Zionism sought to build a secular Jewish national culture on the model of 19th century European Romantic nationalist projects. In this model a people is formed by a common language, displayed in a national literature and theater; this comes to form the basis of a national State to express the will of the people, expressed through their arts and literature, in the realm of politics. Thus the plays take material from Yiddishist authors, Jewish history and mythology and European nationalist epics. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 010771
