Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. de Beer, Sir Gavin. Hannibal: Challenging Rome's Supremacy. New York: The Viking Press, 1969. Second printing, February 1970. Printed and bound in West Germany by Mohndruck Reinhard Mohn OHG, Gütersloh. SBN 670-50648-1. An authoritative narrative of Hannibal Barca's campaigns against Rome during the Punic Wars, written by British historian and biologist Sir Gavin de Beer (1899-1972). Drawing on classical sources, archaeology, and his own Alpine research, de Beer reconstructs Hannibal's audacious march across the Alps, his victories at Trebia, Trasimene, and Cannae, and the eventual decline of Carthaginian power. The work is richly illustrated with maps, engravings, and plates, providing both military detail and cultural context for the Carthaginian-Roman rivalry that shaped Mediterranean history. Condition: Near Fine in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Book clean and square with deep blue cloth boards and gilt spine lettering; minimal toning to endpapers. Jacket bright and glossy with only minor rubbing at spine ends and faint crease near crown. Prior owner name ("Herbert L. Kimmich, Chatham ? Dec. 1, 1970") neatly inked on front flyleaf. Interior crisp, tightly bound, and free of markings. Edition & Printing: Second printing, February 1970 (first published 1969). Printed in West Germany; Viking "Studio Book" imprint. Sir Gavin Rylands de Beer (1899-1972) was a British evolutionary biologist, historian, and museum director. A Fellow of the Royal Society and Director of the British Museum (Natural History), he wrote extensively on embryology and the history of science before turning to classical biography. His works on Hannibal and the Alps reflected both his scientific rigor and his fascination with ancient military logistics. De Beer was knighted in 1954 for his contributions to zoology and scholarship. Provenance: from the library of Herbert L. Kimmich (1935- 2025), Morristown, NJ - mechanical engineer (Stevens Institute; Foster Wheeler executive) and active church member - and his wife Hildegard L. Kimmich (1937-2010), German-born educator and longtime Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church chorister. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers NF.BEE.1970.1
