Beschreibung
1 blank leaf + Series half title (German Philosophical Classics for English Readers and Students) with publisher's list on verso + TP + v-vi = Preface + vii-xviii = Contents + 1-302 + 1 blank leaf. Octavo. First Edition. One of "Griggs's Philosophical Classics", a series devoted to "German Philosophical Classics for English Readers and Students." This was the fourth book of the series to be published (with six more "in preparation")John Steinfort Kedney (1819-1911) was a theologian and professor of divinity, lastly at Seabury Divinity School in Fairbault, MN. His first book, The Beautiful and the Sublime; An Analysis of these Emotions and a Determination of the Objectivity of Beauty was published in 1880. Five years later, he published this close study of Hegel's aesthetics. His account explained Hegel's essential thought without going into minute detail or over ground that could be easily found elsewhere. He claimed that one needed to understand Hegel's philosophy of the Idea in order to fully understand his later treatment of the various arts. The book is divided into three parts: (1) the fundamental philosophy of Hegel's aesthetic theory along with Kedney's commentary, (2) the logical and historical development of the art impulse in Hegel, and (3) all the various arts in detail (architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry). This third section is by far the longest, and it was here that Kedney give his most important definitions and fundamental ideas on the application of aesthetic theory. Original publisher's brown cloth with black lettering on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Small bit of wear to lower edge of front spine. Small rectangular black stamp ("Library of Harry C. Bohlin") to side front cover and also to blank spot on the title page. Harry's signature in pencil to verso of front free endpaper. "James Dingwell" signature also to inside front cover of book. Overall, a very nice copy. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1174
