The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with black topstain and no markings of any kind. The Binding is scarlet quarter cloth to beige buckram (colors uniform throughout except at heel of spine where the dust jacket is missing a piece) with Japanese characters debossed on front of the scarlet cloth, a black stamped image of a woman before a mirror on the buckram, the title, etc., in gilt to spine, unmarked white endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. The pictorial Dust Jacket, protected in a mylar cover, is bright with the original price ($4.95) intact on the front flap, but missing a small chip at top front and a 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" piece from the heel of the spine, with wear showing at the folds. Translated from the Japanese (Shin Heiki Monogatari) by Fuki Wooyenaka Uramatsu and liberally illustrated with pen and ink drawings by Kenkichi Sugimoto with the dust jacket painting by Fumi Komatsu, this historical novel is a modern version of the medieval classic about the 12th century conflict between the Taira and Minamoto clans for control of Japan, originally told by biwa-playing bards and compiled as Heike Monogatari sometime before 1330.
