This lovely book, with the Arts and Crafts era binding design of pale violet irises, contains 2 short stories. The first, and longest, is Sienkiewicz's Christian fantasy story, "The Judgment of Peter and Paul on Olympus". In it the reader finds the two Apostles at Olympus, faced with the ancient Greek gods, Zeus, of course, being foremost, with the muses in attendance. They enter into a debate in which they critique the world of the gods in light of Christian belief and faith, effecting various demonstrations of the strength of their Faith. One could call this short piece an Olympic pastoral idyll. // The second story, "Be Thou Blessed" is a brief fantasy about the Hindu god Krishna. ****************************** The text is printed only on the recto of each leaf, in purple ink . Each page of text is bordered with an ornate design. There are two handsome illustrations in monochrome, with tissue guards. One of these is the frontispiece. ************************* Intensely passionate about Polish sovereignty Henryk Sienkiewicz is considered the greatest of Polish authors . His fictional trilogy "With Fire and Sword" ("Ogniem i mieczem"), "The Deluge" ("Potop") and "Pan Michael" ("Pan Wolodyjowski"), is collectively considered his towering national epics. But the rest of the world knows him mainly for his great epic story of Christian struggle against the power of Rome, "Quo Vadis"; this is a story about the apostle Peter and the tyranny of Nero. Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905. **************************** TITLE : The Judgment of Peter and Paul on Olympus - & Be Thou Blessed. / AUTHOR : Henryk Sienkiewicz (Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz , 1846 - 1916) / TRANSLATOR : Jeremiah Curtain. / ILLUSTRATIONS : Stachiewicz (Piotr Stachiewicz, 1858 - 1938) IMPRINT : Little Brown and Company PLACE : Boston DATE : 1900 EDITION : First American Edition PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Small Trade Hardcover; has two illustrations having guard tissues (one is the frontispiece); text printed on the rectos only, and with the text printed in violet ink, within ornate borders printed in green; title page bordered the same; 24 pages; approximately 5 1/8" x 7" (12mo); decorated gray cloth-covered boards; title, etc. lettered in gilt on front board, above which is a vignette of irises done in pale violet and black; top edge gilt; fore-and bottom edges rough-cut This lovely little volume is 108 years old and is practically as bright as the day it was issued.
