Covers slightly marked, lower hinge cracked, rear free endpaper lacking, some minor worm damage; title-page, final page, and front free endpaper a little embrowned. Inscribed to his daughter, the future Anne Norwich, by B.E.H. Clifford, one of the heroes of modern adventure (he features in the frontispiece), "Anne with love from Da Da. The Duke of Wellington when asked to give advice to a young subaltern said 'Never lose an opportunity to tish'". With (her?) pencilled ownership inscription, "Clifford", and, loosely inserted, an autograph picture postcard signed to her from her mother, 26 March [1970s?]. The Hon (Sir) Bede Edmund Hugh Clifford was the first white man to cross the Kalahari Desert, in 1928: he is pictured here with "the [five, cheerful] natives who guided him back to camp after he had lost his way in the bush". Lady Clifford writes decades later to her daughter from Beirut, "You can imagine the nostalgia that I felt - for you and John Julius and your enchanting house - How I adored staying with you there . . .".
