A very scarce first edition of Bearne's fascinating history of French heroines, in a lovely half calf Bayntun binding. In a half calf binding, signed by Bayntun. Top edge gilt. Bookplate to front paste down. 30 plates including the frontispiece. Collated complete. Catherine Mary Charlton Bearne explores the lives of four extraordinary women who were alive during the French Revolution, the First French Empire and the Restoration: the talented painter Madame Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842), the noblewoman La Marquise de Montagu (1766-1839), the famous socialite Madame Tallien (1773-1835); and the writer Madame de Genlis (1746-1830). In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities and the spine, and a loss to the head of the spine. Colour is good and gilt is bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the fore edge, which affects the occasional page. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 834M20
