Grayson and printed in Charleston, South Carolina by McCarter & Co. 1856, 1st edition, 169 pp, 7.75 x 5.25 , 8vo, hardcover cloth binding. In good condition, with minor rubbing and loss to boards. Some loss to head and heel of spine. Hinges remain in good condition and text block remains bound well. Light markings and marginalia. Grayson (1788-1863), a poet and former member of the House of Representatives for South Carolina. Grayson s The Hireling and the Slave, a poetic defense of slavery, is the first recorded use of the term Master Race , a saying that would later be adopted (both genuinely and satirically) to describe white supremacy and white supremacists.
