Il offre une vision positive à la fois de Mahomet, qu'il dit homme de génie, grand législateur, conquérant et monarque, et de sa religion qu'il caractérise comme juste et tolérante. Il s'est radicalement démarqué de ses contemporains, pour lesquels Mahomet reste et restera longtemps encore un symbole du fanatisme plutôt qu'un exemple de tolérance. Dans la préface à Mahomet, Voltaire le confirme :« M. le comte de Boulainvilliers écrivit, il y a quelques années, la vie de ce prophète. Il essaya de le faire passer pour un grand homme que la providence avait choisi pour punir les chrétiens, et pour changer la face d'une partie du monde. » (lettre à Frédéric de Prusse, 20 janvier 1742).
