The first London printing of this account of Waterloo by noted French military historian and War Minister, Jean-Baptiste-Adolphe Charras. From the library of Cefntilla Court which belonged to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan. Following the death of his father, 1st Baron Raglan, a large group of his friends, admirers and comrades purchased the house and estate as a memorial to him. This book therefore belonged to the estate of Raglan's family. Raglan served in many military campaigns such as the Peninsular War and the Hundred Days. At Waterloo Raglan served on Wellington's staff. He later became the commander of the British troops sent to Crimea in 1854. Whilst in Crimea he was ordered to besiege Sevastopol. His command lead to the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. Two volumes bound in one. With the half-titles. In the original French. An uncommon work, written by an esteemed French military historian. He was Under-Secretary of State, Department of War in 1848. He was also the Interim Minister of War in 1848 for eight days. Charras undertook this work whilst exiled in Belgium. It has a strong anti-Bonapartist tone and was written at the request of the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, an close acquaintance of Charras. Charras was the son of General Joseph Charras who was a Napoleonic officer. A scarce publication regarding the Napoleonic battle, from an anti-Bonapartist perspective. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to the joints and extremities. A few light marks to the paper covered boards. Split to the tail of rear joint with the hinge still firm. Bookplate for Cefntilla Court to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Very Good.
