2 volumes, small square 8vo, pp 122, [2]: 131, [1], half titles, contents at ends, wood-engraved frontispiece in volume one, and text wood-engravings throughout by Bertall, bound in contemporary quarter red French morocco with faux cloth sides and corners, spines gilt with raised bands, all edges gilt, slightly rubbed and worn at faux paper edges and corners corners, paper of sides faded in places, slight wear to foot of one spine, else a very good clean and attractive set, FIRST EDITION of Dumas' famous elaboration of the E T A Hoffman story, and in this form to become famous in both French and later English translation. The Tchaikovsky balet utilizes the action of this version, abridged for its first English appearence in 1847 which included just some of Bertall's memorably lively illustrations.
