Beschreibung
2 vols. quarto and folio atlas volume, pp xvi, 533; [vi], [305], [180 - Apendice and index]. Vol. ii has an "Apendice" which is by Alfredo Chavero, titled:"Explicacion del Codice Geroglifico de Mr. Aubin": atlas volume consists of 65 full-page engravings apparently drawn from the mss. Though Duran's book was composed sometime in the 16th century - it goes up to 1581 - it was not published until 1867 shortly after the manuscript had been found in Spain; publication was not finished until 1880. It was based, in the Indian part, on the Codex Ramirez, and is considered one of the most authentic and detailed chronicles of the times and customs. Pena in his History of Mexican Literature states: [it is] "a history essentially Mexican with Spanish features . this work is individual in that it gives us a living picture of the Aztecs . the author, in spite of his crude language, is admirable in his knowledge of people. No one has depicted the nature of the Indian more discerningly; furthermore, he enters into minute details concerning the religious and civil practices, the public and private customs and habits which other writers have disdained as inappropriate material for serious history but which give his book some of the interest possessed by autobiographical writings." Half calf over marbled boards. Vol. 1 and 2 have a little foxing in the first couple of pages and the last, then clears up entirely, the rest of the text being quite clean. Both volumes are uncut. This copy of the Atlas is very clean, with no water damage, which is quite rare in my experience. The set in excellent condition, without flaws, is scarce: a flooded basement of the printer wholly destroyed many copies while others were made up from the remaining, often damaged leaves. Very good set. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7232
